This module explains why timber should be treated or coated. It details issues around durability, classification and selection, and goes on to look at design and choice of species affect coatings’ performance, the different types of coatings and finishes, exposure conditions and planned maintenance.
Aims
To appreciate the advantages of using wood coatings including prolonged life, reduced maintenance requirements and application techniques.
Objectives
By the end of this module, you will:
- understand why we should treat and coat timber;
- know about durability, classification and selection;
- be familiar with design, species and their relevance to coating performance;
- know about the types of coatings and finishes;
- be aware of the influences of exposure conditions and planned maintenance.
